Welcome to Green Country Drag Boat

Welcome RACE FANS to Green Country Drag Boat where your need for speed is fulfilled!

We are live here at GCDB headquarters in Locust Grove, Ok.   I spent Saturday mid-morning with the crew as they were loading up the trailers, servicing the rigs, and making sure that everything was in tip-top shape for the long haul to Phoenix for the Lucas Drag Boat Racing World Series, November 4th – November 7th, 2010.

I even found out how two retired TAF drivers fulfill their need for speed!  Check it out on our YouTube Channel Green Country Drag Boat Productions.

I interviewed Tommy Thompson and the Crew – I appreciate the time they took to answer my questions and was in awe as to how easy-going these guys were to talk too.  Tommy said there is no other family like the Drag Boat Racing Family and I believe that to be true after watching these guys work and get in a little goofing off time.

Tommy Thompson, Driver of A Few Dollars More and Owner, of  Fist Full of Dollars, A Few Dollars More, and SHAZAM took time from his busy schedule to answer a few questions.

Q: Tommy When did you start racing and where?

A: I began racing in 1982 when all they had were MPH classes.  I ran in the SDBA association in the 80 mph class and my first run was in Little Rock, AR.  The name of my boat was Buck$ UP

Q: Have you always raced on Water or have you ventured over to land.

A: We did try dirt track racing but did not find it as enjoyable as the Drag Boat Racing and the Drag Boat Family are pretty special folks.

Q: Tommy, what is your most memorable race?

A: All of my races, Nancy, have been memorable – I think that any racer you ask they will tell you that any race you run and get safely across the finish line is a memorable race.  One race in particular that I do remember was in Waco in ’84, here is the picture of the result of losing an engine in that race, I was heading straight down the track and then all of a sudden something gave and the boat took a hard left and I ended up on a dock on the bank.

Q: Tommy, what do you do to unwind, I mean relax or what takes your mind off of the stress of being a driver of a boat that can go 170 mph?

A: I love to fish and hunt.  I just got back from New Mexico with my Son Tommy, Jr. where we both caught two 5×5 Bull Elk.

I caught this big bass on my place in Zapata – that was a fun fight!  And I caught this huge crappie in my Lake on my property here in Locust Grove.

Q:  Wow Tommy, those are some nice fish!  What type of pole are you using because I don’t think just any pole would be strong enough without breaking?

A: I use a pole made by a company that I’m involved with called Wohali, that is Cherokee for Eagle. We sponsor the Pro-Fisherman Terry Butcher who just finished 4th in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year!  Check out their website Wohali Performance Outdoor Lifestyle Gear.  They moved to a new location in Claremore, OK on October 4th.

Q: Tommy, thank you for your time, I know you are very busy and Good Luck in Phoenix!

A: Thank you Nancy, I’m excited to see the new website and for the launch.  It allows us to be even closer to our fans, without them this would not be possible!  Thank you again and we will talk to you after the races.

Tommy was off again being pulled in many directions trying to get everything done in a short period of time.  I was fortunate that Tommy shared with me what he calls his wall of memories.  I will save this for another post later on in November.  It is amazing the memories and stories that can be told from that wall of memories not only by Tommy but from several members of his crew.

Once again, Welcome to Green Country Drag Boat & the GCDB Family, this website/blog is for you and we have some fun things planned this week for the launch.  Please, if you like this website, leave comments on the posts, the entire team reads these posts and really loves to read what you say.  If you have a question you would like to ask, please leave a comment with your question.  We will have more Q&A with the drivers and the crew!

Scotty Walker and Fred Price were two more crew members that I was able to pin down for some interview time.  I also got to interview someone who means a great deal to me, my Dad, Gary James.  I was having a great day among all these great guys and they were very accommodating with their time!

I’m interested in the hull you use. I own a Rayson-Craft, my second Rayson-Craft. My boat is getting a bit tired. Yours seems state of the art. Is the hull made and marketed by you? Any information will be much appreciated. I’m not a racer. My idea of ski boat is a bit fast. I’ve run a low profile Rayson-Craft 97 mph. That’s not very impressive for competition, but makes for very fine family fun. Thanks for any information you may share. Gene
